Owl Pen Books Has New Owners!

6EA393DB-09C2-432C-8872-6BC03A2A8A04_1_102_o

Introducing Sydney Nichols, Eric Kufs, and their daughter Sally Jane, new owners of Owl Pen Books, beside happy and greatly relieved Edie Brown, owner for the past 40 years.

Sydney is a graphic designer; Eric is a singer/songwriter/guitarist and writing and literature teacher; Sally Jane is 4. They relocated from Southern California to Greenwich, New York in the middle of winter. They share a love of books and entrepreneurial spirit and may expand the Owl Pen offerings to include vinyl.

Edie has been accompanying them on book calls, advising them on the nuts and bolts of running a bookstore, and will continue to share her years of experience. Sydney and Eric are proving to be quick studies and Edie is thrilled that Owl Pen Books will continue under their enthusiastic and youthful stewardship.

Owl Pen Books will open as usual for a fresh, hopefully COVID-free, season on Saturday, April 30, 2022, with plenty of fresh stock and fresh faces at the checkout table!

We hope you’ll visit to browse for books, meet Sydney, Eric and Sally Jane and enjoy the gardens and countryside!

Owl Pen Books Closed for Vacation September 6-11, 2021

Dear Friends,

It’s been a very busy summer and Edie needs a little break and time with her sisters. I’ll be at our Cape Cod house starting Monday, Labor Day, 2021 and returning at the end of the week.

I’ll reopen for business on Sunday, September 11, 2021 and will have regular hours until the end of October.

I apologize for the inconvenience and hope you’ll visit when we reopen.

Yours,

Edie Brown

200 year old house, 60 year old antiquarian book store for sale!

Dear Friends,

We eagerly seek a buyer interested in living in a 19th century farmhouse with several outbuildings on 100 acres on a dirt road in idyllic Washington County, New York and running a long-established rare and used book business.

Around 1960, Barbara Probst, who ran a book and gift shop at Skidmore College, bought an old house in Greenwich, New York, started a chicken farm, selling books in a small outbuilding, then evicted the chickens and expanded the bookstore into the chicken barn.

Around 1980, she sold it all to Hank Howard and Edie Brown, who have operated Owl Pen Books since. Over the decades the store became a regular destination for other booksellers replenishing their stock, summer visitors to the area, and generations of local collectors and readers. Articles about the shop have appeared in the Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer and Saratoga Living.

Hank and Edie made regular excursions to homes in the area to buy books. There’s over 35,000 books, from fine, old, rare, collectible books to inexpensive used books for readers and children.

Hank died a year ago, and Edie would like to sell the business and property to someone who will continue operating it. The land is now conserved; the house has been repaired and cleaned and painted; the shop is open.

We welcome you to browse, and buy our books.

Last weekend for 2020 at Owl Pen Books!

Dear Friends,

Heartfelt thanks to all who visited this summer and fall, and especially for your help in keeping us and you safe from the coronavirus. It’s always a pleasure to have friends from previous years return to shop, and, yes, it’s great when new customers visit.

We’ll be open our regular hours, 11 am to 5 pm, through Sunday, November 1. If it’s cold, we’ll have a fire in the woodstove.

During the winter, much of our stock is listed for sale on Abebooks.com and Amazon.com.

We wish you all a healthy and happy winter, holiday season, and coming year.

Non-essential books by appointment!

Dear Friends,

We hope you’ve all safely survived the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Due to COVID-19 state business restrictions and because we’re rational and caring and don’t want to be infected or be a vector in infecting others, we did not open to the public as usual on May 1.

But we’re here and performing the usual spring rituals, cleaning the shop and restocking the shelves. We’ve even cleared away all the trees which blew over during a recent wind storm.

We invite you visit to browse for books by appointment during regular business hours. Call 518.692.7039 or email owlpenbooks@gmail.com.

Please do not make an appointment if you’ve experienced symptoms or been in recent contact with any infected persons. Wear a mask and sanitize your hands.

Stay safe and read a lot of books,

Edie and Hank
